State of Affairs

August 11, 2012

Hey guys. I thought I should drop an update to explain why there’s been no new pages in weeks, for those of you who haven’t been digging through comments or keeping up with my whiny whiny twitter account.

Right now I’ve got what is apparently a stress-induced stomach ulcer and bronchitis. Long-time readers might remember I got bronchitis before (around last May) and updates ground to a complete halt for about a month. With the ulcer this is actually much worse – I’m coughing until I vomit, and it’s preventing me from getting any good amount of sleep and from eating properly.

I’m so desperate to get back to work, but I can barely get out of bed at the moment. RMR will be back as soon as I can physically manage it, but unfortunately I don’t have an ETA right now. Thanks for being patient.

I hope that You recover as soon as possible. Good people (even those that kill characters sometimes) shouldn’t be ill.

Take care. It’s more important for you to get well, than to have new comic pages! We’ll be here to read and comment when you’re back. :)

Bronchitis is the worst, hope you get better soon!

Boy oh boy don’t I know it. I’m running a fever right now and I feel like I can’t quite breathe. This sucks sooo much.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

When I had bronchitis I could barely breath, and if I tried to take deep breaths/exhale deeply I’d go into a coughing fit. Absolute misery. Second time I got bronchitis they gave me some cough syrup that was spiked with codeine. That stuff was the best.

Oh gosh, I get weak in the stomach when I try to imagine what it must be like to have bronchitis + ulcer. I don’t know what to say. I’ll keep you in my prayers ;____;

Get well soon! So much better a healthy you than an updated comic. (Love the comic, though. Well written and absolutely gorgeous artwork. There’s really nothing else like it on the web. Thanks for all you’ve done so far!)

Let me add my hope for your fast recovery,… but…
I wonder about the diagnosis…
I’ve read that ulcers have been revealed as
being caused by bacterial infections not stess.
The stress may have weakened you immune system, but the
solution is more antibiotic than R&R.
Sorry if I’m butting in.

No worries, that seems like sensible advice. However, I’ve already been tested for bacterial infections and it came up negative. I also just finished a course of antibiotics so either way I think my doctor is doing her best.

Health is more important than updates. Do whatever it takes to get well, get healthy, before doing updates again. Your fans will still be here waiting, so don’t worry!

D: Goodness, that is the worst string of terribad illnesses I have ever seen! How do you manage to do these things to yourself, young comic creator-type?
Anyway, yes, I give the gift of sympathy! Get better soon or I’ll feel REALLY guilty for being impatient for new pages before I saw this :S

Thank you for the update – it’s always good to hear that you aren’t dead or something. I’ve been figuring it must be something nasty to stand between you and all these fireballs and badassery. :-(

Take care of yourself. We can wait however long it takes.

Nope. No. Uh uh. Unacceptable. I don’t know what’s wrong with these people, but I, for one, demand proper and timely updates on a regular schedule. I don’t care about your weak human tendencies. I demand nothing short of perfection.

Get well soon. ;)

I agree these fleshbags are far to frail to rely on for regular timely created artistic entertainment, i shall set our agents to work cyberverting all, starting with Kyethn, her frailties with come to an end and the entertainment stream shall resume. :P

get well soon, wish you all the best now and in the future.
(p.s. don’t try to resist our agents, it will only result in you getting damaged further.)

Hope you feel better soon! Taking care of yourself is your #1 priority. We’ll be here when you make it back. :)

Absolutely happy to wait. So long as you live. If you don’t I will be sad.

Take care of yourself, and I’m sure we will all be here mostly-patiently waiting for you :)

second all that – and everything more !!!
… lots of energy, strength, endurance, a quick & merciless immune system … and somehow the mental power to pull through.

… and a huge, humble & awed thank-you for your work & dedication!

Just letting you know that I’m using your comic as a defense against homesickness. I recently moved into my college, and it’s pretty far from home sweet crazy home…BUT I HAVE RED MOON RISING WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH :D

Reply

Haha! That’s delightful, actually. I’m glad it’s helping you. :) It reminds me of when I first moved to a new city for university when I was 18, I watched a whole hell of a lot of Stargate SG-1. It was oddly comforting while I was still settling in.

Any updates on how you’re doing, Rose?

I’m still not too great. The bronchitis seems to have cleared up for the most part, but I still have a very chesty lingering cough, and my ribs are completely shot right now. I’m about to go back to the doctor since I can’t inhale deeply without getting sharp pains, so that’s not great. I’m hoping this is the home stretch, though. Updates soon I dearly, dearly hope.

Now it´s been longer than a month; sadly not a good sign. Do everything to regain full health again before winter, do not let that become chronic. My best wishes!

Dear Rose

Sorry to read of your continued prostration – that doesn’t sound good. Pauline and I will be through in Dundee on Monday and Tuesday – on Patrick-related matters as it happens. Can we bring you any succour in the form of soup/cakes/the chance for a coffee and a chat/a spare body to inhabit while yours gets better?

Oh my, that’s very kind of you to offer. I’m more injured now than sick I would say, my ribs are very, very sore. Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to get out to meet you anywhere – I went to the doctors yesterday and just walking there seemed to make things worse. I wouldn’t want to be a bother either if you’re busy with stuff related to Pat.

Reply

Hi Rose, Pauline here – it would be absolutely no bother. I reckon we’ll be free by half three both days. We could easily do some shopping and bring it round to you or we could take you out in the car to get stuff/coffee/ a meal? just whatever might make you feel a bit more human. Email and let us know what we can do( if anything).

So now I’m developing a dry cough, and I can’t help but think about you when I go into a hacking fit. Hoping this doesn’t develop into bronchitis, but if it does we should start an international sick party or something. (It probably will like it did the last three times this has happened. This is becoming too routine for me.)

I can totally relate, my dear. I had chronic bronchitis that turned into pneumonia, and was coughing for two months straight :( I hope that’s not what you have. Have they done a spirometery (breathing test) yet? And I hope the ulcer is going away too. I wouldn’t wish those on my worst enemy.

GET BETTER SOON!!!!!!!!!!

Just wanted to say:
Wow, I’ve been reading (lurking amongst) these comments for a while now, and I have been sort of cringing and waiting for the Impatient People Squad to show up and give the artist a hard time for being sick and not updating. It hasn’t happened. You all are very, very, thoughtful and nice people.

I’m just thirty-seconding everyone else and saying “Get better, take care of yourself. I am awed by this wicked-good webcomic (especially the latest pages) and I’ll continue lurking till the indefinite future. “

Reply

Just found this comic and though it is a tragedy that I must wait for more awesomeness, get well at your own pace. I know whats like to not be able to work on your art, it’s maddening, but do what you have to do. You aren’t losing any fans for sure, and you’ve gained a new one.

Reply

As a long time lurker/reader and a fellow ulcer sufferer, I just felt the need to second everyone here and wish you a speedy recovery. I know how terrible you must feel, so try to minimize stress and the comic can wait until your health improves. Really love your artwork, it’s amazing.

Dear Rose,

I MISS YOUR COMIC SOOOOOO MUCH!
OK, I got that out of my system. All my chesty influenza type things have taken me months and months to get rid of that awful soreness and weakness. Really, you need to just sleep & rest and have someone cook you nourishing food. Sending positive vibes your way…I am seeing you as a Tarzana swinging from trees, just shining with vitality! Make it so!

This is here just to keep up the chain letter of good wishes. Are your lungs clearing up?

Every few years, just because I am getting old, I get this near pneumonia thing; walking pneumonia. The coughing actually strains muscles in my rib cage. I find that wrapping your ribs in Ace Bandage, after slathing your ribs in red Tiger balm, supports those muscles and gives them a chance to heal faster.

I very much wish you to get better and out of this illness corner, especially before Winter, even if you never update the comic again. See, totally selfless ;)

Reply

Thanks for the kind words and advice, man. :) My lungs are finally clearing up, though it seems I had a relapse of infection over the last few weeks. I was getting quite strong pain in my ribs, intense enough that I needed to have an x-ray to rule out broken ribs.

Was just at the doctor today and she says the infection’s mostly passed, nothing’s broken, and that I probably have costochondritis. So… more rest, more painkillers. Not sure how long it’ll take to heal up, but hopefully I can start working again soon.

Reply

Rose, forget the comic, I’m really REALLY worried for you! How are you doing? Please tell me you’re getting better/are not bedridden/ANYTHING OPTIMISTIC MAN

Reply

Gosh, sorry to have worried you. :( But it’s very sweet of you to leave a comment like this.

Basically I’ve been having quite intense rib pain after the bronchitis, and needed a chest x-ray to figure out what was going on. Just got the result of that today – nothing’s broken, but it did show an infection once again. Fortunately, that seems to have mostly faded in the time between the x-ray and the doctor’s appointment, but I still have the rib pain. So the doctor says it’s costochondritis, and that I should just rest and manage the pain until it heals up on its own. Right now it hurts to walk around, breathe deeply or sit up, so I’m feeling a bit restricted. Kind of a bummer, but hopefully it’ll dull soon so I can get back to work.

And can I just say how lovely you all are? I expected at least someone to be a update-demanding jerk after all of this time, but to a person you’ve all been supportive and wonderful. You guys are the best. Thank you so much.

Reply

Well, we all DEMAND updates, but we camouflage them with concern and empathy.

Just joking. ;)

Be careful, inflammations are not to toy with, and take your time to recover. Remember what i said earlier – be prepared for the wintertime! It´s already on the doorstep, supermarkets are already filled with chocolate santas. :-D

Hi Rose, don´t let “young Christian (?!) American (rolleyes) reader writer dreamer wanderer walker flier (?) listener talker scholar adventurer musician-on-a-mission(rolleyes…) romantic critic religious (rolleyes…) idealist (rolleyes…) optipessimists(!)” anger you. ;-))

Reply

Why would it anger her? It was a fair review and not negative from what I can see. Though the writer doesn’t seem to have the greatest reading comprehension (I too never got any characters confused), I think the review was honest. It downplayed the comic a bit, but those who read it quickly realize what a gem they’ve found. One review doesn’t tarnish her work. If anything, people will see his review and come running over here to see what it’s actually about. No reason for her to get angry at all o.0 I don’t get your string of supposedly-negative adjectives for him either… Did he mention a god, a country, or ideals in the review at all XD I didn’t see any.

Reply

Gosh, while I appreciate the fervent support, I’m actually with Erin on this one!

It’s not the most glowing review I’ve had, and there’s a few general mistakes – my gender(which has been fixed now), the length of the hiatus and number of pages, but otherwise it seems fair. Honestly there’s quite a few derp faces in the older pages that I’d been thinking about going back to fix, and the pacing is always something I’ve struggled with. I think it’s improved a lot recently, but that’s like 30 pages versus another 260 in the archive.

I think I mentioned on twitter I was bit bummed out for about half a day over it, but it’d be unrealistic to expect everyone to like what I’ve done, and egocentric to think it’s beyond critique. I think in the end the guy wrote a pretty fair(and mostly positive, come on!) review, and what more can you ask for?

I´m the wrong adresse. I don´t take wannabecritics with verdant taglines like these for serious, and just signaled Rose to follow suit. ;)

His “write-up” is simply lousy, and he obviously has issues in identifying quality on plain sight. So no, no reason for appeasement! BANZAI!! ;)
But i´m currently on holidays and not on jihad, so i leave it here waiting patiently for page 294. ;)

And Rose, glad to hear that you´re finally a bit better now!
